Description
The design features La Catrina, an icon of Mexican culture associated with the celebration of the Day of
the Dead. This figure was created by Posada, an engraver and caricaturist who created the Garbancera
Skull character to criticize women who wanted to dress like the wealthy ladies of the time. The idea was
to mock those women who left their customs to try to dress and behave in a more European style.
José Guadalupe Posada (1852-1913), originally from the city of Aguascalientes, created the character of
the Garbancera Skull with the image of a skull dressed in a feathered hat in the style of European
fashion at the time. Later it was renamed “Catrina” by the famous muralist Diego Rivera. This design is
based on the multiple catrinas of Posada. Catrinas that have become one of the symbols of Mexican
culture.
